Extended warranties and Total Care Service Packages

When you purchased your equipment you may have also purchased an Extended Warranty or a Total Care Service Package. If your equipment has a malfunction you will need to contact the place of purchase or the Extended Warranty or the Total Care Package company.

If you are advised by the warranty company to bring the equipment to Camera Clinic for repair please make sure you advise us of the claim number and the name of the extended warranty company. Most extended warranty companies will e-mail a repair form to you. You will need this repair number and form to log your repair with the repair centre.

If the warranty repair is inspected and found to be warranty void e.g. impact, water or sand damage, we will email you the technical report advising you and the extended warranty company the findings We will ask for your authorisation to submit a quote to repair the unit.

If you accept the terms and conditions a quote will be carried out and a inspection fee is applicable.

If you choose not to have the unit quoted it will be returned no charge except if freight is applicable.

Compact digital lens faults

The lens on a compact camera is the major moving assembly and faults/damage can occur.

My lens is failing

If you turn the camera on, it powers up, the lens comes out then retract straight away

Why has my camera lens failed?

There are many reasons why a lens fails.

A mechanical failure in the lens assembly

The auto focus gears may have jammed or broken

The camera has sustained impact damage

Sand has penetrated the lens assembly – this will jam the lens gears

The camera has been accidentally turned on while it is still in the camera case

Can this be repaired?

There are generally two different repair processes for a lens repair

Dismantle the lens and re-seat the lens assembly

Dismantle the lens and replace the complete lens assembly - the complete assembly can be costly

Note: The auto focus motor in a compact will produce a slight noise, this is because the auto focus in a compact is always working.

The noise you hear from the auto focus motor is normal. In some cameras the auto focus noise may be recorded in movie mode.

Damaged card pins

Card pins accidentally damaged

I have bent card pins in my Digital SLR/Compact Camera, how did it happen?

Cards incorrectly inserted can damage/bend the CF card pins.

Inserting a card in the wrong way can distort or break the pin. A distorted or broken pin can short circuit or damage the circuit board.

The CF card holder is connected to the Main Printed Circuit Board.

Can the pins be repaired?

The repair process depends on the extent of the damage and if the main printed circuit has been damaged.

We can attempt to remove the damaged pin and transplant a new pin

Remove the card pin assembly and replace the complete assembly

Replace the pin assembly and the main printed circuit board

Important note: Please check your cards for damaged – inserting a damaged card may damage the pins again.

Forcing a card in or out can seriously damage the camera. If in doubt stop and refer to markings on the card door or instruction book

The XD, MMC, SD, SM and memory stick have exposed gold contact avoid touching them especially if you experience static discharge though touch.

Camera focus testing

Auto Focus not working

The Auto Focus is not working on my camera. Is there anything I can try?

Self testing:

Check the camera has not had the auto focus switch turned off. On some model camera’s there is a separate auto focus switch on the camera body.

Check the auto focus switch has not been turned off on the lens.

Try another lens on the camera.

While camera is turned off, remove the lens and clean the body contacts near the bayonet mount.

Apply the same clean the lens contacts at the end on the lens.

Re-set the camera functions, in the menu of the camera there should be a re-set function. This will re-set the camera back to the manufacture specifications.

Check to make sure the camera focau point is set to center point focus.

If all the above trouble shooting does not eliminate the focus fault you will have to bring/send the unit is for repair/inspection.

Most digital SLR cameras they have an in-built diopter, if the image is blurred in the view finder but sharp on the display your diopter may not be set to your eye sight.

Check your instruction manual for the position of the diopter and the adjustment method.

Camera pixel

Active or in-active pixels

I have coloured dots showing on my image. What is it?

These are active or in-active pixels.

What are Pixels?

Pixels are an item of information. They are arranged in a grid order using dots, squares or rectangles. Each pixel contains the information of the image you have taken.

Why is my image effected?

All digital cameras have active or in-active pixels, it is impossible to produce a CCD with out them. These no-corporative pixels are turned off and a mapping file is produced to identify where they are. This mapping file is applied to every imager and lives with in your camera image processing circuit.

Can the active or in-active pixels be removed?

We can re-map the pixels using service software. CCD's can develop new naughty pixels and it is necessary to produce a new mapping file. Only a service center with the appropriate software can re-map a CCD. If the re-map fails a new CCD will be required.
